Breaking News: Cavaliers Trade Delonte West and Sebastian Telfair to Minnesota

Though talks have been rumored for quite some time, the Cavaliers have officially acquired guard Ramon Sessions from the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Joining Sessions on his trip to Cleveland will be center Ryan Hollins and a second-round draft choice in 2013.  Heading to Minnesota in exchange for the pair of players are guards Delonte West and Sebastian Telfair.

West has long been rumored to be on the move after an up-and-down season that featured several missed games and a slight regression in his statistics from the previous year, averaging 8.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 25 minutes per game.  West’s name had been on the trading block since the end of the 2010 playoffs due to his team-friendly contract that only guarantees him $500,000 in the event of a release.  He will also likely serve a suspension stemming from a late-2009 incident resulting in the players arrest on weapons possession.

Telfair came over from the Los Angeles Clippers at the trade deadline last season when the Cavs moved Zydrunas Ilgauskas for Antawn Jamison.  He spent most of the season rehabilitating an injury, but managed to earn playing time at the end of the season after the Cavs had locked up the top seed in the Eastern Conference.  In a limited role over four games, Telfair averaged 9.8 points and 3.0 assists in 19 minutes.  Picking up his player option, Telfair is due $2.7 million in 2010-11.

Neither Telfair nor West are expected to be long term pieces with the Timberwolves.

Sessions will likely get the bulk of the minutes vacated by West and Telfair, also spelling current point guard Mo Williams with the roster as presently constructed.  Known for his ability to push the ball and distribute, Sessions is seen as a fit for Byron Scott’s uptempo offense.  In 21 minutes per game last season, the 6-foot-3-inch Sessions averaged 8.2 points, 2.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game.  He is due approximately $13 million over the next three season.

Hollins, a 7-foot center with four years of experience, will join the Cavaliers averaging 6.1 points, 2.8 rebounds a 0.5 blocks in 16.8 minutes of play in 2009-10.  He will likely serve a back-up role but will instantly become the tallest member of the Wine and Gold with current starting center being the 6-foot-10-inch Anderson Varejao.  He is due $2.3 million this upcoming season and has a player option of $2.48 million in 2011-12.

The official trade was first reported by Bob Finnan of The News-Herald. It was later confirmed by Yahoo! Sports’ Marc Spears.
